After breakfast, you’ll journey from Arusha to Londorossi Gate for registration, then drive to the Lemosho trailhead. The trek begins in a lush rainforest, with towering trees, dense undergrowth, and the sounds of birds and monkeys filling the air. The path is rich with flora and fauna, including black and white colobus monkeys. After approximately 3-4 hours, you’ll arrive at Mti Mkubwa Camp (2,650m), where you’ll settle in for your first night on the mountain, surrounded by the vibrant rainforest.
Leaving the rainforest behind, you’ll enter the heather and moorland zone, where the landscape opens up to reveal expansive views of the Shira Plateau. The trail is a steady ascent, with fascinating volcanic formations and a chance to spot unique flora like giant groundsels. The day’s trek lasts about 5-6 hours, ending at Shira 1 Camp (3,610m). Here, you’ll enjoy a hot meal, take in the views, and prepare for the next day’s adventure.
Today’s trek is a gradual ascent across the Shira Plateau, an ancient volcanic caldera with impressive views of Kibo Peak. The trail offers a relaxing pace, allowing you to take in the spectacular scenery and acclimate. After a 3-4 hour trek, you’ll arrive at Shira 2 Camp (3,850m), where you’ll have the afternoon to explore, rest, and adjust to the higher altitude. From here, you can see the jagged peaks of Kilimanjaro’s glacier-covered summit in the distance.
This day is crucial for acclimatisation as you ascend to Lava Tower (4,630m), where you’ll have lunch and adjust to the higher altitude. The landscape shifts to an alpine desert, with sparse vegetation and striking volcanic rock formations. After a rest at Lava Tower, you’ll descend to Barranco Camp (3,960m) through the stunning Barranco Valley, known for its giant senecio and lobelia plants. This descent aids acclimatisation, and you’ll settle into Barranco Camp surrounded by unique vegetation and towering cliffs.
The day begins with the thrilling climb up the Barranco Wall, a steep but non-technical ascent that provides breathtaking views over the valley. At the top, you’ll enjoy a short break to take in the panoramic scenery before continuing through the alpine desert to Karanga Camp (4,035m). This 4-5 hour trek is a great acclimatisation day, with time in the afternoon to rest and enjoy the unique landscapes around Karanga Camp.
Today, you’ll embark on a gradual ascent from Karanga to Barafu Camp (4,640m), where you’ll make your final preparations for the summit. The trail is rocky and barren, with breathtaking views over the southeastern valleys and Mawenzi Peak. Reaching Barafu Camp by early afternoon, you’ll have time to rest, review your summit plan, and enjoy a hearty dinner. An early bedtime is essential, as the midnight summit push begins soon.
The summit day begins around midnight, with a challenging trek under the stars. You’ll climb up steep, rocky terrain to reach Stella Point, where you’ll be rewarded with a spectacular sunrise over the African landscape. From here, it’s a final push to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the highest point on Kilimanjaro. After celebrating at the summit, you’ll begin the descent back to Barafu Camp for a short rest and breakfast before continuing down to Mweka Camp (3,080m), where you’ll enjoy a well-earned night of rest.
On your final day, you’ll descend through lush forest back to Mweka Gate (1,640m), passing through beautiful scenery and enjoying the last moments on the mountain. At the gate, you’ll receive your summit certificate, a cherished memento of your Kilimanjaro adventure. After celebrating with your team, you’ll return to Arusha, where you can relax and reflect on your incredible achievement.
