9-Days kilimanjaro Machame Route (6-Day Ascent)

The Machame Route, often called the “Whiskey” route, is renowned for its stunning landscapes and diverse scenery. This route offers panoramic views of Mount Kilimanjaro and the surrounding environment, including the famous Barranco Wall and the alpine desert. The Machame Route is more challenging than the Marangu Route due to its steep ascents and the fact that the ascent and descent follow different paths, providing hikers with a unique perspective of the mountain. The 9-day itinerary includes a 6-day ascent with one additional acclimatization day, significantly increasing your chances of reaching the summit.

The Machame Route, often called the "Whiskey" route, is renowned for its stunning landscapes and diverse scenery.

You’ll be picked up at Kilimanjaro International Airport and transferred to your accommodation in Moshi or Arusha. After a briefing on the climb, you’ll have time to relax and prepare for the adventure ahead.
On this day, you’ll ascend through the moorland zone to Shira Camp, located at an altitude of 3,840 meters. The hike is about 5-6 hours long and offers beautiful views of the mountain and the surrounding landscape. Shira Camp is one of the most scenic spots on the Machame route, where you’ll rest and acclimatize
Today’s hike takes you to Barranco Camp, located at 3,950 meters. The trail will pass through highland desert terrain with rocky paths. The highlight of today’s hike is the Barranco Wall, a steep, rocky section that requires some scrambling, but it is a rewarding challenge. You’ll camp at Barranco Camp, where you’ll enjoy the breathtaking views.
From Barranco Camp, you’ll continue your ascent to Karanga Camp. The trail is shorter but still challenging, taking you through rocky terrain and offering stunning vistas of the mountain. Once at Karanga Camp, you’ll rest and prepare for the next stage of the climb.
Today’s trek will take you to Barafu Camp, situated at 4,700 meters. The trail passes through barren, rocky terrain as you approach the high-altitude environment near the summit. Once at Barafu Camp, you’ll rest and prepare for the summit ascent that will begin early the next morning.
You’ll begin your summit climb early in the morning, trekking through the night to reach Uhuru Peak. The climb to the summit takes around 7-9 hours. After reaching the peak and taking in the stunning views, you’ll descend to Mweka Camp, where you’ll spend the night.
Your descent from Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate will take around 3-4 hours. Once you reach the gate, you’ll receive your summit certificate as a reward for your achievement. Afterward, you’ll be transferred back to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha for a well-deserved rest.
You’ll have the option to either depart or extend your trip to Zanzibar for a beach holiday. Either way, you’ll have time to reflect on your incredible Kilimanjaro experience.
