After breakfast in Arusha, you’ll drive to Machame Gate (1,800m), where the team will finalize entry formalities. The trek begins through lush montane rainforests, with towering trees, dense vegetation, and a variety of wildlife including colobus monkeys and exotic bird species. This section of the trail is known for its beauty, with sounds and sights of the vibrant forest all around. After about 5-6 hours, you’ll reach Machame Camp (3,000m), nestled in a clearing where you’ll enjoy your first night in tents, surrounded by the sights and sounds of the forest.
Leaving the rainforest behind, today’s hike takes you up through moorland and heather zones. The path becomes steeper and rockier, offering increasingly stunning views of the Kilimanjaro landscape. As you ascend, you’ll see unique flora, such as giant groundsels, and views of the Shira Plateau. You’ll reach Shira Camp (3,840m) after about 4-5 hours, where you’ll settle in and enjoy breathtaking views of the Shira Ridge and Kibo Peak, Kilimanjaro’s highest point.
Today is a challenging but rewarding day for acclimatization. After breakfast, you’ll trek toward the Lava Tower (4,630m), a striking volcanic rock formation, where you’ll rest and acclimate. The landscape here becomes more rugged, with rocks and scattered vegetation. From Lava Tower, you’ll descend to Barranco Camp (3,960m), passing through the enchanting Barranco Valley filled with giant senecio trees. This day’s trek is essential for acclimatization and helps prepare you for higher altitudes.
Today begins with the thrilling Barranco Wall, a steep but non-technical ascent that rewards climbers with spectacular views. The climb up the Wall is challenging yet manageable with the guidance of your experienced team. Once at the top, you’ll enjoy sweeping views of the Karanga Valley and the surrounding landscape. You’ll then continue through the alpine desert to Karanga Camp (4,035m), where you’ll have the afternoon to rest and acclimate.
After a hearty breakfast, you’ll leave Karanga Camp and continue the ascent to Barafu Camp (4,640m), the base camp for your summit attempt. The path is barren and rocky, with limited vegetation, highlighting Kilimanjaro’s unique landscape. You’ll reach Barafu Camp by early afternoon, giving you time to rest, enjoy a warm meal, and prepare for the midnight summit push. Your guide will review final preparations to ensure you’re ready for the upcoming challenge.
Your summit day begins around midnight, with a challenging ascent under the starlit sky. Following a slow, steady pace, you’ll trek up steep, rocky terrain to reach Stella Point at the crater rim, where you’ll witness a breathtaking sunrise. From there, a final push will take you to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the highest point in Africa. After celebrating at the summit, you’ll begin the descent back to Barafu Camp for a short rest and breakfast, then continue down to Mweka Camp (3,080m) for a well-deserved night’s sleep.
On the last day, you’ll descend through the forested slopes, retracing your steps to Mweka Gate (1,640m). The forest is lively with birdsong and occasional sightings of wildlife, offering a peaceful conclusion to your trek. Upon arrival at the gate, you’ll receive your summit certificate, a testament to your achievement. After celebrating with your team, you’ll return to Arusha for a relaxing evening and to reflect on your Kilimanjaro experience.
