Itinerary Description By Day

Day 1: Londorossi Gate to Forest Camp

  • We depart from Moshi for Londorossi Gate, which takes about 4 hours
  • Here at Londorossi Gate you will complete registration formalities
  • Then drive to the Lemosho trailhead (another hour to reach the trailhead)
  • Upon arrival at trailhead, we eat lunch, then commence through undisturbed forest which winds to the first camp site
  • Dinner and overnight stay at the camp site

Day 2: Forest Camp to Shira Camp 1

  • We continue on the trail leading out of the forest and into a savannah of tall grasses, heather, and volcanic rock draped with lichen beards
  • As we ascend through the lush rolling hills and cross several streams, we reach the Shira Ridge before dropping gently down to Shira 1 camp
  • The view of Kibo from across the plateau is amazing
  • Dinner and overnight stay at Shira Camp 1

Day 3: Shira Camp 1 to Shira 2

  • We explore the Shira plateau for a full day
  • It is a gentle walk east toward Kibo’s glaciered peak, across the plateau which leads to Shira 2 camp on moorland meadows by a stream
  • Then we continue to Moir Hut, a little used site on the base of Lent Hills
  • A variety of walks are available on Lent Hills making this an excellent acclimatization opportunity
  • Shira is one of the highest plateaus on earth
  • Have dinner and overnight stay at Moir Hut

Day 4: Shira Camp 2 To Lava Tower To Moir Hut Camp

  • Climb towards the Lava Tower a 300 ft tall rock formation
  • Arrive in the early afternoon at the tower for a lunch break
  • This day is meant for acclimatization allowing your body getting used to high altitude
  • The path finally leads to Moir Hut for dinner and overnight stay

Day 5: Moir Hut Camp To Buffalo Camp

  • Trek out of Moir Valley while approaching summit of Lent Hills before joining the Northern Circuit trail
  • Explore the landscape offering spectacular views across the plains that stretch out to the Kenyan/Tanzanian border
  • Proceed with the trail to reach Buffalo camp for dinner and overnight stay

Day 6: Buffalo Camp to Third Cave

  • Trek up the Buffalo Ridge which provides beautiful views and a remote wilderness feeling
  • The path leads to Third cave for dinner and overnight stay

Day 7: Third Cave to School Hut

  • Climb upwards the saddle formed between the two stunning peaks of Kibo and Mawenzi
  • Enjoy the magnificent scenery displayed by Kibo
  • The path leads to School Hut where you will arrive in the afternoon
  • Take the rest of the day off recuperating for the next day
  • Retire to bed as early as 19:00

Day 8: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp

  • In the midnight guide will awake you and have breakfast with some hot tea and biscuits in arranging to get you prepared for the summit attempts
  • You will trek in a north-western course through dense scree toward Stella Point, arriving there in about five to seven hours
  • At Stella Point you may rest if required before taking on another one to two hour hike along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak
  • Have a magnificent views as you stand on top of Africa
  • After taking as much pictures as you can, you will leave behind the shiny glaciers and snow-white peak and make your way back down to Barafu Camp
  • At Barafu Camp you will have time to grasp your breath before heading further down to Mweka Gate (3,080m)
  • Have a delicious dinner and an overnight stay here

Day 9: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate

  • After an energetic breakfast and a parting ceremony you will start your final descent to Mweka Gate where you will collect your summit certificate
  • A relaxed two to three hours walk will take you through the flourishing rainforest
  • Reaching Mweka Gate you will meet our transfer driver waiting for you, who will take you to Arusha or a flight back home
